Microsoft Internet Explorer Support Changes

Microsoft is terminating support for older versions of its popular browser application Internet Explorer on Tuesday, January 12, 2016. As of that date, Microsoft will no longer release security updates, patches, or bug fixes for all versions of Internet Explorer except Internet Explorer 11.

In an effort to keep the campus computing environment secure for everyone, all computers must be upgraded to IE 11 before February 1, 2016. If your computer is centrally managed by IT, all previous versions of IE will automatically be removed and IE 11 will be installed during the regular maintenance window. If your computer updates are managed by you or your department’s technology staff, you or your department technician must remove all previous versions of IE and install IE 11 or greater before February 1.

University of Nevada School of Medicine clinic computers will automatically be upgraded by IT separately during its regular maintenance window.

After January 12, if you are still running an unsupported version of IE on the campus network, you are putting the University at risk. All University owned computers are licensed for IE 11 under the University’s Microsoft license agreement. Unsecure computers cannot be allowed on the University network, so if you need help upgrading to IE 11, contact IT Support at (775) 682-5000 in Reno or (702) 671-5100 in Las Vegas to open a work order, or email help@unr.edu or medhelp@unr.edu. Please be aware there may be additional expenses required to upgrade your computer, other software, or other equipment in order to run the latest versions. IT staff can advise departments on inexpensive ways to upgrade or replace computers in order to run currently supported operating systems and applications.

If you have an important business need that requires an older version of IE (i.e. research equipment, critical applications, etc.), you must contact IT Support with detailed computer information before Friday, January 8, 2016, so someone can assist you in finding a secure solution.

What’s the plan for the IE 11 upgrade?

  1. After final exams end on Wednesday, December 16, at 5:00 p.m., all centrally managed general access and lab computers will be automatically upgraded to IE 11. IE 11 will also become the default version of Internet Explorer on all centrally managed new computers.
  2. During the Friday, December 18, regular maintenance window, IE 11 will be made available to all other centrally managed computers to install at your convenience. Click on the notification pop-up window in the bottom right hand corner of your computer screen to accept the installation. Multiple reboots may be required.
  3. If you aren’t able to install IE 11 before January 12, the centrally managed installation will automatically be installed during the regular maintenance window on Friday, January 15, 2016. Multiple reboots may be required.
  4. If you aren’t going to be on campus between Friday, December 18, and Friday, January 15, the centrally managed installer will automatically run the next time your computer is powered on. Multiple reboots may be required.
  5. On or around Monday, January 25, a reminder with instructions will go out to all centrally managed computers that have not upgraded to IE 11 notifying them that the computer poses a security risk and will be removed from the domain on Monday, February 1 if it is not upgraded by that date.
  6. On Monday, February 1, 2016, any computers still running older versions of Internet Explorer will be removed from the domain and no longer able to log in. Computers not on the domain will be removed from the network as IT becomes aware of them.

If you encounter unexpected problems with an IE 11 upgrade or applications that use it, contact IT Support to open a work order. In the meantime, you can use Firefox or Chrome browser applications as a workaround.
